Membership scholarships are available to those professionals who wish to join AFP, but for budget reasons cannot afford the cost of membership. Scholarship seekers are asked to attend at least one AFP event prior to applying. The application and correlating documents are reviewed by a committee of AFP members. Scholarships are awarded based on the need of the applicant, special emphasis going to those who work for organizations with an annual budget less than $1 million. Once the member is awarded the scholarship they are asked to volunteer on at least one committee and attend at least six membership lunches (paid for by the scholarship).
Scholarships are also awarded to help AFP members continue their professional growth and education. Each year AFP of Palm Beach County awards scholarships for Planet Philanthropy Conference, held every July. Also, AFP of Palm Beach County awards at least one Chamberlin Scholarship, allowing a member of AFP PBC to attend the AFP International Conference. Details and qualifications for scholarship assistance to the conferences will be posted as the events are nearer.
In 2009, the Palm Beach Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals lost a dear friend and Board member, Suzanne Foley, to cancer. Suzanne was a true role model in the fundraising profession. She was a woman full of grace and enthusiasm to give back to others. To honor her commitment to our profession, our Board instituted the Association of Fundraising Professionals Youth in Philanthropy Award in Memory of Suzanne Foley to be given to a graduating high school senior who had demonstrated results in meeting the needs of the community outside of school. This scholarship is awarded once a year at the National Philanthropy Day Celebration.
